Birds and Whales of May Kayak Tour - Sea Kayaking Gwaii Haanas National Park and Haida Heritage Site
This early season kayak tour is scheduled to coincide with hundreds of migrating humpback whales and thousands of nesting sea birds. This kayak tour focuses on the central part of the park featuring the wildlife rich waters of Juan Perez Sound and Burnaby Narrows plus visits Gandll K'in Gwaayaay (Hot Spring Island) for a soak in the hot pools.
The focus of this tour is wildlife viewing and the overall distance travelled on this tour is less than on our other Haida Gwaii kayak tours allowing us to spend more time in areas where we have the greatest wildlife viewing opportunities. We will likely spend just as much time in our kayaks as our other Haida Gwaii tours but the goal will not be so much to get from point A to B as to more fully explore the waters and wildlife surrounding each of our camps.
Haida Gwaii is a wildlife viewers dream. There are 750,000 seabirds breeding in Gwaii Haanas National Park, more bald eagle nests per kilometre of shoreline than anywhere else in Canada, and the highest breeding density of Peregrine falcons in the world. One third of British Columbia's Steller sea lion population calls Haida Gwaii home and humpback whales may be seen throughout the park. Burnaby Narrows has some of the highest levels of living material (called biomass) of any intertidal zone in the world.
From remote wilderness travel, fantastic wildlife, and a rich First Nations heritage, this area encompasses it all. Visitors to the park are limited, due not only to it's remoteness but also a strict quota system implemented by Parks Canada. We hope you can join us for this special trip.
